How to Reset Check Engine Light on a RAM 1500

check engine light on

Have you just noticed your RAM 1500 check engine light flash? While it doesn’t mean that you necessarily need to pull over and wait for a tow truck, you shouldn’t ignore it either. But maybe you’re certain you’ve fixed the issue, yet it won’t go off. While we recommend that our service department in Ontario look at the issue for you, we’ve put together the guide below on how to reset the check engine light on a RAM 1500.

How to Reset the Check Engine Light on a RAM 1500 – Step by Step

The RAM 1500 engine light should go off on its own once the relevant issue has been resolved. What if you believe the issue has been resolved? If you are certain, you may want to try to reset it yourself. You can follow the steps below:

  • Make sure the ignition is turned off.
  • Find the negative (-) post on your truck’s battery. It will be the terminal that does not have the red cover.
  • Disconnect the negative terminal. Leave it disconnected for about 20 minutes.
  • Reconnect the negative terminal.

Figuring Out Why Your RAM 1500 Check Engine Light is Flashing

The best way to determine the reason your RAM 1500 check engine light is flashing is to schedule an appointment with our service department and let us diagnose the issue. Alternatively, code readers are fairly inexpensive and can be found at big box retailers and any Shelby auto parts store. Once you get a code reader, follow these steps:

  • Plug the reader into the socket
  • Turn on the ignition
  • Search the internet for the code and its meaning

Your Gas Cap Could be the Culprit

Many Ashland drivers are completely unaware of the simplest possible cause of the RAM 1500 check engine light– the gas cap may be loose. We recommend checking this first before doing anything else. Follow the steps below:

  • Remove the gas cap
  • Screw it back on tightly
  • If the cap was the problem, the light should go back off once you’ve driven about 10 to 20 miles
