The Jeep Cherokee started as a two-door SUV based on the Wagoneer in 1974, and got a redesign as a unibody platform is 1984. In 2001, the Jeep Cherokee went on hiatus until 2001 due to the Jeep Liberty meeting the market. However, the Liberty failed to meet the success of the Jeep Cherokee, and the Cherokee returned to meet the compact SUV market.

The biggest difference between the two vehicles is the Jeep Grand Cherokee is a midsize SUV and the Jeep Cherokee is a small crossover vehicle.
